Xiaomi Redmi 5 first look…
With this kind of hardware and software, will this phone be able to challenge the Lenovo K8 Plus (Review), Samsung Galaxy J7 and Nokia 5. We have spent some time with the Redmi 5. Let us tell you how we liked this smartphone at first glance?
The growing popularity of 18:9 displays can be gauged from the fact that all the recently launched smartphones by Xiaomi come with this type of screen except the cheaper Redmi 5A. The Redmi 5 has a 5.7-inch screen and its body is smaller than even the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 is heavily inspired by its powerful variant, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. The metal body is the same, but it is smaller in comparison due to the smaller screen. The Redmi 5 weighs 157 grams. There is a 2.5D curved glass on top. The phone is 151.8 mm long, 72.8 mm wide and 7.7 mm thick. Xiaomi has also provided a TPU cover in the retail box due to which it will slip less in the hands.
There are no physical buttons on the front panel. The home, overview and back buttons are on-screen. There is a 5-megapixel front camera above the display. It also has its own LED selfie light. The camera performance is similar to other handsets in the budget segment, but the LED flash helps in low light. There is also a Smart Beauty 3.0 feature to improve selfies. But we will discuss its performance in detail during the review.
On the back, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 sports a 12-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus, HDR and LED flash. The Redmi series handsets are not known for having the best rear cameras. The situation is the same with the Redmi 5. In the limited time we spent with the phone, we found that the Redmi 5 takes some good pictures in adequate light. But the performance is weak in low light. In such a situation, we would once again ask you to wait for the review.
The phone has a fingerprint sensor at the back which is placed below the camera. The design of the phone is such that there is no problem in reaching this sensor. It also worked fine during initial testing.
There are volume and power buttons on the left edge of Redmi 5. There is a hybrid SIM slot on the right side. You will be able to use two nano SIM cards or one nano SIM card with a microSD card at a time. There is a micro-USB port and loudspeaker at the bottom of the phone. The 3.5mm headphone jack, infrared emitter and microphone are placed on the top.
The 18:9 display has HD+ (720×1440 pixels) resolution. The phone uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor. The good thing is that this is one of the cheapest smartphones available in the market to come with this processor. We will evaluate its performance during the review. We have spent time with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. The phone never slowed down during use for some time. But also remember that we used a brand new phone.
Xiaomi’s latest smartphone runs on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box. Like other Xiaomi phones based on MIUI, Redmi 5 has many customization options. At present, there is no information about the update to Android Oreo.
Talking about the software, MIUI has a security app which is used to clean memory and storage, scan malware, monitor battery consumption. You will be able to customize the app lock as per your wish. Apart from this, features like blocklist feature, separate space for privacy and dual apps are also available.
Screen recorder app, Mi Remote, Mi Drop, Facebook and Shopping app are also provided in Redmi 5. Apart from these, Microsoft apps like Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Skype Lite will also be available.
The 3300mAh battery powers the device. MIUI has a sleep mode which is claimed to greatly improve battery life by closing background apps.
Gadgets 360 will soon come up with a detailed review of the Xiaomi Redmi 5. In this, we will discuss in detail the performance of the phone’s camera and processor.
