A special headline is made by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC with which the phone has debuted in India. It is based on 4nm technology and is clocked at 3.05GHz. This is a huge upgrade and makes it quite powerful among the flagship smartphones of this segment of 2022.
Vivo X80 has been launched in two variants. The base model has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and is priced at Rs 54,999. The second variant has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage and is priced at Rs 59,999.
Vivo has fitted the new V1+ imaging processor in it which supports processor demanding tasks like capturing photos in night mode, speeding up frames during game play, etc. The company says that this smartphone has the largest single chamber vapor cooling system, which is not available in any other smartphone in India. On paper, this phone is a device that offers a top notch experience and I will test these claims of the company in its full review. After using the phone for a while, I can say that its cooling system works, as the camera app did not shut down even after the phone’s body got heated up during video recording.
In terms of design, it is similar to the X70 Pro + that was launched last year. In fact, the only difference between the two new smartphones and the old ones is that the periscopic camera is not seen in the X80 and X80 Pro. Everything else is the same and appears in the same place. The company has rated the phone IP53, which is not usually seen in phones of this segment.
The phone has an aluminium alloy frame which is placed between two glass layers. The sides of the phone are curved. The rear panel has fluorite AG glass and has a matte finish, which does not let fingerprints appear easily. My unit was in Urban Blue finish, which looks quite fresh and different. The overall finish of the phone looks quite premium and despite weighing 206 grams, it does not feel too heavy.
The Vivo X80 has a 6.78-inch E5 AMOLED display but it does not come with LTPO technology which is offered in the slightly more expensive X80 Pro. The resolution is FullHD Plus and the maximum refresh rate is 120Hz. Its maximum touch sampling rate is 240Hz. I played Call of Duty: Mobile on it, the game ran smoothly. I will further test its new chipset for gaming. The display has Schott’s Xensation Up protection, which is like a fingerprint magnet on initial use. The phone has dual stereo speakers which was not there in the X70 Pro.
Talking about its camera, the phone has Sony’s new 50-megapixel IMX866 sensor. It has RGBW pixel arrangement and optical image stabilization is also available. Vivo says that it comes with better light sensitivity for photos and videos in low light. I will test it in the full review of the phone. The X80 has a 12-megapixel portrait camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide angle camera. Neither of these two has OIS.
Like the Vivo X80 Pro, the X80 also features Vivo’s new Zeiss-branded video styles feature. Through this, you can shoot videos in a cinematic aspect ratio of 2.39:1. Camera panning styles for photos are also a new feature. With this, you can add motion blur to the background of the photo.
The phone comes with a 32-megapixel camera for selfies. It also has a cinematic style feature that allows photos to be taken in a wider angle. My initial impressions say that its camera system is quite capable. Detail and dynamic range are quite good. I missed the telephoto camera for portrait shots. Details were less in digital zoom but I will save the last comment for the full review.
The Vivo X80 has a 4,500mAh battery that charges very fast with an 80W charger. There is no wireless charging, which is a big omission, as is also seen in the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G. Even the Apple iPhone SE (2022) has this feature, which is also less expensive.
The company says that it will provide three Android OS updates for the phone and will also provide security updates for three years. This is a big deal. The phone runs on Funtouch OS 12 which is based on Android 12. The software runs well but there are a lot of third-party apps that come with it.
The Vivo X80 is not just a camera-centric phone, but its hardware also has the ability to deliver a good gaming experience. It seems to be a great upgrade over the X70 Pro. Apart from having a powerful processor, it also has stereo speakers and IP rating. In terms of competition, the phone is quite attractive and it competes with the Realme GT 2 Pro and Motorola Edge 30 Pro.
