Vivo defeated Samsung and Apple as India’s leading smartphone brand in 2024, IDC report shows mint

According to the latest International Data Corporation (IDC) report, smartphone giant Vivo has topped India as a major smartphone brand in 2024 in 2024.
The IDC report also said that India’s smartphone market increased by four percent year-on-year, which reached 151 million shipments. The first half of the year was particularly strong, which balanced the slow growth in the latter half. However, in the fourth quarter, the market saw a small three percent dip, 36 million units of shipping.
The report said that Apple had a standout year, which became the fourth largest smartphone brand in India after the United States, China and Japan. The company recorded 12 million iPhones, marking a 35 percent increase compared to the previous year. Even Apple made it to the top five brands in India for the first time, with 10 percent market share in the fourth quarter. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 13 were the most popular models, along with six percent of the total shipment.
The smartphone is getting a price, average selling price (ASP) $ 259 (approx) 22,640 in 2024). But this time the price increase was only two percent, much less than the double digits jumps seen in recent years. The mid-range segment ($ 200- $ 400) saw the biggest boost, growing 35.3 percent and now is a 28 percent market share. The premium segment ($ 600-$ 800) also increased by about 35 percent, mainly operated by the previous generation Apple and Samsung model.
5G adoption increased, with 120 million 5G smartphones sent to 2024. The 5G models suited to the higher budget were in high demand, making about 47 percent of shipments. The popular 5G model included Xiaomi Redmi 13C, iPhone 15 and Vivo Y28.
Both online and offline sales increased at the same rate of four percent, with 51 percent of the total sales offline. Samsung dominated online, while Apple went to fourth place, thanks for the success of iPhone 15. In offline sales, Vivo led himself, followed by Oppo and Xiaomi.
Further, Navakendra Singh, Associate Vice President, Client Devices and IPDS, IDC India, believe that the growth of market growth in 2025 will depend on strong sales in the mass segment and more options in the mid-range category. He also states that AI-managed features will become a major sales point at various price levels.
