Learning and experience through the filmmaking process of my recent film ‘Viduthalai’ made me a student of Marxism, “Film director Vetri Maran said at a cultural program at the cultural program, which was done at the Communist Party of India (Marxist) 24 in 24th.Wan Congress here on Friday.
He said that learning gave him a serious perspective that any social structure built on the foundation of Marxism would go against the people.
He said that the homework that went for the film ‘Viduthalai’ for almost two years, introduced him to many leaders, books, people and places, which he did not come in his 40 years experience of filmmaking, he said.
“An important lesson I learned that the leaders are not those who are attractive, but those who stand with people through their struggles and fight to win their freedom. But the current landscape oversees the leaders of those people,” he said.
He said that his penance and courage were made entirely on his ideology.
On converting a novel or a short story into a film, he said: “I learned the needs of skills from my master Balu Mahendra, with whom I worked for a series of short films made for the Kadai Neram serial inspired by various short stories.”
He remembered that Balu Mahendra taught him how to see a novel as a story and structure, joined its artistic part.
He said, “If plain story and structure are not interested in the reader, it cannot be made in a film,” he said.
But still the challenges during the film production should be faced by the filmmaker, Mr. Waitri Maran said.
He said that author Pumani’s ‘Vekkai’ novel which was built in Asuran was not satisfactory for the author, but should be handled as the aspect of filmmaking was different from the writing process, he said.
Addressing the audience, actor-director Samuthikani said that during his first experience of participation in the Federation of India Conference of state-wide students, he learned how simple the communist leaders were in their lives.
He said, “The most important purpose of the communists is to equalize the differences and social hierarchies and in their journey they face obstacles thrown by other hidden forces,” he said.
“My only request for communist parties is to work for a joint remaining conflict to face the upcoming conflicts,” said Mr. Samuthikani.
A documentary on former CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yachri was released by the film Madurai MP Su. Venkatsan with Sri Vetritaran and Sri Samuthikani.
Earlier, the singing and dance performance of Kerala Mapla Muslim women mesmerized the audience.
