Tecno Phantom X2 5G First Impression: Competition with big brands like Oneplus, Realme in the Rs 40 thousand segment!

Tecno has started its year 2023 in India with the launch of the Phantom X2 5G smartphone. Through this, the company has entered the premium segment. The smartphone is the successor to the Tecno Phantom X, which was launched in 2021 and is still available for purchase for Rs 25,999. However, in terms of specifications, many upgrades are seen in the Phantom X2 5G. The company has made major upgrades in many areas including processor, camera, display in the new smartphone. In terms of design also, the new smartphone brings a completely new and trend-free camera module compared to the previous model.

Tecno Phantom X2 5G has been launched in the country in a single 8GB RAM and 256GB storage variant, priced at Rs 39,999. It has been introduced in Moonlight Silver and Stardust Gray color options. Pre-booking of the phone has started on Amazon India. To attract customers, Tecno and Amazon are offering Amazon Prime membership absolutely free for 12 months on pre-booking.

The Tecno Phantom X2 5G comes in a large box, which houses the device, a USB Type-A to Type-C cable, a 45W charging adapter, a Type-C earphone, and a soft plastic case.

Tecno sent us the Moonlight Silver colour variant of the Phantom X2 5G. The company says that the smartphone is the world’s first moon crater inspired design. Its frame is made of metal. The back panel comes with a frosted glass finish, which does a great job of hiding fingerprints. Although the choice of colours may be different for everyone, but I liked its Moonlight Silver colour very much. However, if you are among those who like classic dark colours, then you can also take a look at its Stardust Gray colour option.

Tecno has tried its best to give this smartphone a premium look and feel, which you will feel as soon as you hold the smartphone in your hand for the first time. The smartphone comes with a unibody double-curved design. According to the company, the thickness of the smartphone is 8.9mm, but the curve of both the back panel and the display made of 3D AG glass / recycled fiber has been kept the same, due to which the metal fret in the middle feels flat and slim and due to this the smartphone looks premium and thin.

The power and volume buttons are fitted on the right side of the phone’s frame, while the left side is kept empty. There is a microphone on the top and a USB Type-C port, microphone, dual 5G SIM tray and single speaker at the bottom of the frame. Yes, you will miss stereo speakers in this smartphone launched in the sub-Rs 40,000 segment. A large square camera module is given on the back panel, in which a triple rear camera setup with LED is fitted. This setup has two large camera sensors, which can attract anyone’s attention from a distance. Both the large camera sensors have round glossy metal rings around them. Certainly, this camera module does a great job of making the Phanton X2 different from the current trend. However, whether you like it or not, it depends entirely on you.

The Tecno smartphone gets a 6.8-inch FHD+ (1080×2400 pixels) curved flexible AMOLED display, which is equipped with 120Hz refresh rate, 360Hz touch sampling rate and P3 wide color gamut. The company claims that this 8+2Bit display is TUV Rheinland certified and comes with the protection of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. The pixel density of the display is 371ppi and it supports a peak brightness of 700nits. Despite being curved, the display has uniform but thin bezels around it. The fingerprint sensor is also fitted under the display.

Tecno claims that the Phantom X2 5G is the first phone in its segment in India to come with TSMC’s MediaTek Dimensity 9000 5G SoC built on a 4nm process. It is capable of operating at 3.05GHz clock speed and comes equipped with Mali-G710 MC10 GPU. Tecno says that the phone is equipped with 3CC carrier aggregation and 11 5G bands. It gets ‘Dual 5G SIM Dual Active’ feature, which means both 5G SIMs can be active simultaneously. It is not a hybrid SIM, which means the storage cannot be expanded, but in its only variant you get 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It includes 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The smartphone also includes Bluetooth BT 5.3, NFC and OTG support along with dual band Wi-Fi 6 support.

For selfies and video calling, the smartphone gets a 32-megapixel front camera equipped with 80.6 degree field of view and f/2.45 aperture, which is fitted in the hole-punch cutout present in the center of the display. For selfie lovers, an LED flash is also provided near the earpiece at the front, which can work to help in selfies and video calling in low light. The front camera can only record videos up to FHD (1080P) at 60 FPS.

Tecno has included a lot of camera features in it, including Super Night Mode, Document Scanner, Panorama Mode, Burst Shot, Video Ultra Steady, Dual Video, 4K Time-Lapse, 960 FPS Slow Motion, Night Video, Custom Makeup, Wide Selfie, etc.

The Phantom X2 5G gets a 5160mAh battery, which supports 45W charging. The company claims that the battery can be charged up to 50% in 20 minutes. However, we will check the actual performance of the battery and charging in our review. The smartphone comes with HiOS 12.0 based on Android 12, which has some bloatware on first boot, some of which can also be removed. However, there are many native apps, which you will have to disable (if you want to avoid unwanted notifications).

The chipset in the smartphone is quite capable for gaming, for which Tecno has included a vapor chamber cooling system in the smartphone. However, the gaming performance is yet to be tested by us, which you can read in our upcoming review.

Although Tecno has increased the price of the Phantom X2 5G compared to the Phantom X, the smartphone has also received many major upgrades over the previous model, such as specifications, a more powerful chipset than before, a bigger battery, faster charging support than before, etc. However, we cannot ignore other smartphones in the sub-40,000 category, which have heated up the competition in this segment, such as Realme GT2, Realme GT Neo 3 5G, Vivo V25 Pro, OnePlus 10R 5G Endurance Edition, iQoo 9 SE 5G and Motorola Edge 30 Fusion 5G smartphones. In such a situation, can the Tecno Phantom X2 prove itself to be a successful all-rounder amid this tough competition? Should you buy this smartphone by spending around Rs 40,000?
