‘Sky Force’ Movie Review: Akshay Kumar valiantly rocks this story

Veer Pahriya and Akshay Kumar in ‘Sky Force’
The dogfight between the Indian Air Force’s Mystery and Pakistan Air Force’s Starfighter during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 is one of the best aerial sequences in the history of the IAF. This Republic Day week, two debutante directors, Sandeep Kewlani and Abhishek Anil Kapoor, join hands to recreate the actions of Squadron Leader Ajmanda B Devaiah or Tammy in the Sarjodha Air Strike. Devaiah’s vital role in the victory remained obscure for two decades until his team leader Wing Commander OP Taneja’s dogmas brought the facts of the battle to light and the country honored Devaiah with the Mahavir Chakra. Curiously, the script follows a similar pattern and maintains its contribution as a surprise factor. As in real life, he is ‘missing in action’ for long periods of time in the cinematic retelling.
Responding to Pakistan’s attack on Pathankot and Halwara airbases, Sargodha was India’s first air strike inside Pakistan, when the IAF hit the enemy’s most defended airbase and destroyed 10 of its prized assets. Devia created the slow-moving, subsonic Mystere Punch, punching well above its weight to shoot down the much faster and technologically superior supersonic starfighter to save its allies.
While the recent surge in nationalist narratives may serve a socio-political purpose, they also show that the political will and firepower of the Indian armed forces are not in line with post-2014 developments. in this regard, sky force A welcome addition to stories of national pride. Archival pictures of Lal Bahadur Shastri give perspective to India’s strength, behind the success of 1965.
Kevalani and Kapoor have helped Amar Kaushik Woman fame. Kaushik has co-produced the film with Dinesh Vijan. His is the only team that is consistently hitting targets at the Bollywood box office, perhaps because they serve the story rather than the star. However, in sky forceThey have deviated from the path to some extent. The star of the story here is Mahavir Chakra awardee Devaiah, fictionalized as Krishna Vijayan (played by newcomer Veer Pahriya). He is the ‘rebel’, the non-conformist in the force, who was denied his name in the history books for more than two decades due to circumstances and official indifference. This character makes for a more colorful and nuanced central hero than Vir Chakra awardee Wing Commander Op Taneja, who was fantastically performed by Akshay Kumar with his trademark enthusiasm as Kumar Om Ahuja, who is in the context of the film. I came out wrong. Like the fictional name combines the star’s real and on-screen identities, the film’s gaze is tilted towards Akshay, making the narrative and emotional experience incoherent.
Sky Force (Hindi)
director: Sandeep Kewalani and Abhishek Anil Kapoor
mold: Akshay Kumar, Veer Pahriya, Sara Ali Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Manish Chaudhuri, Varun Badola
run-time: 125 minutes
Story: A fictional account of India’s first air strike on Pakistani territory
Vijayan’s story carried the turmoil to whip up nationalist sentiments. We want to know more about him, and Veer Pahriya puts in the effort to realize his present, but is reduced to a supporting act, as the film trades Akshay’s screen image for that of a patriot. Have pandered which has become painfully predictable these days. Ahuja is the narrator, expected to take us into Vijayan’s story, but when Akshay becomes the driving force, the subject matter becomes secondary. It unfolds like a textbook chapter, without the emotional texture of the soldier, left out of the action as a stand-by. Akshay not only eats up Vijayan’s screen time, but he also minimizes the contribution of PAF Flight Lieutenant Amjad Hussain (Sharad Kelkar), whose account of the war is in John Fricker’s book. fight for pakistan Little more than a footnote, Vijaya’s contribution was brought to light. Perhaps, the makers are conscious that these are not the times to deliver some brownie points to the ‘enemy’.

Unlike the men in uniform, the female characters don’t have much scope to express themselves. As Vijayan’s pregnant wife, Sara Ali Khan fails to add any layer to the story. Nimrat Kaur shines in her three-scene appearance as Ahuja’s factional spouse. In a film about teamwork, Manish Choudhary and other supporting actors are also there to take over the reins from Akshay. They always miss the trick unless the star shows them the possibilities.
Furthermore, the cinematic depiction of aerial adventure comes with a limitation. Fighter planes chew up the scenery, providing the heroes little room for action and emotional maneuvering. We get repeating shots of men in aviators on the tarmac over a walloping background score. While some of the computer-generated combat in the air is really effective, after a point when only machines operate on the screen, the awe factor slowly dissipates.
In the last 15-20 minutes, when Vijayan’s heroics take center stage, the VFX-generated somersaults finally find an emotional purpose and bring one to the edge of the seat. But by then, one had gasped for airtime too thin to absorb its impact.
