Review of Oppo F11 Pro

In an attempt to make a bezel-less smartphone, handset manufacturers are setting the selfie camera in three different ways. These days, smartphones with notch, punch hole display and pop-up module are available in the market. You will find many smartphones with notch in the market, but smartphones with punch-hole and pop-up design are gradually strengthening their hold in the market. Handset manufacturer Oppo’s latest smartphone Oppo F11 Pro comes with a pop-up selfie camera, which is priced lower than other pop-up selfie camera smartphones available in the market such as Vivo Nex and Oppo Find X. Let’s know whether buying Oppo F11 Pro smartphone is a profitable deal or not?

Design of Oppo F11 Pro

Oppo has launched some of the most well designed smartphones in the market and now the company is using gradient finish in most of its models. The Oppo F11 Pro was launched in Aurora Green and Thunder Black colours and we have the Thunder Black variant available with us. The back panel of the phone is dark blue on one side, purple on the other and black in between. This reminds us of the Oppo Find X which also used a similar gradient finish. The front of the device is just the display which has thin borders on the top and sides while the bottom is a bit thick.

Talking about the display of Oppo F11 Pro, it has a 6.53 inch full-HD + LCD display. It is equipped with a 90.90 percent screen to body ratio. There is no notch on the front panel of the phone and the device has a motorized pop-up selfie camera on the top. This module will also help you in face recognition. This is a motorized module, so we are not sure how reliable it is in the long term. Its mechanism can also get damaged if the device falls. The smartphone also has a secondary microphone and an ambient light sensor on the top.

The earpiece is placed just above the display, which is located between the frame and the display. To the left of the earpiece is the proximity sensor which is neatly hidden. The display has a pre-applied screen protector. You will also get a protective case in the retail box which works well with the pop-up selfie camera. There is a micro-USB port at the bottom of the phone, which may disappoint you a bit because budget smartphones like Nokia 5.1 Plus (Review) and Samsung Galaxy M20 (Review) come with USB Type-C port.

Along with the micro-USB port, there is a 3.5mm audio jack, microphone hole and loudspeaker grill. The frame of Oppo F11 Pro seems to be made of plastic but it is not at all light. The power button is located on the right side of the phone while the volume buttons are located on the left side of the phone. They are located at the appropriate place, due to which they can be used easily. The hybrid dual-SIM tray is placed just above the power button. There are two rear cameras on the back of the phone. The capacitive fingerprint sensor is placed just below the rear camera.

The edges of Oppo F11 Pro are curved due to which it can be held comfortably in the hand. Its weight is 191 grams, which means this phone is slightly heavier than average. In the retail box, you will get a 20 watt VOOC fast charger along with the earphones, with the help of which you will be able to charge the 4,000 mAh battery quickly.

Oppo F11 Pro specifications, software and features

The Oppo F11 Pro is a slightly different phone compared to other smartphones in the Rs 25,000 segment. This is because it comes with a pop-up selfie camera in this price segment. The hardware of the phone is good but not amazing. It has an octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 processor that comes with four Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores. The smartphone will come with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

It is worth noting that along with Oppo F11 Pro, the company also launched Oppo F11 smartphone which comes with 128 GB storage. If you want, you can also increase the storage with the help of microSD card instead of second SIM. This handset of Oppo has a 6.53 inch full-HD + (1080×2340 pixels) LCD display. The screen is crisp and its viewing angle is also very good. You can also change the color output of the display as per your choice. Connectivity features of Oppo F11 Pro include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS / A-GPS.

Oppo F11 Pro Pop up

The Oppo F11 Pro runs ColorOS 6.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie. This is a significant change as some models come with the older version of ColorOS based on Android Oreo. The new UI is quite simple and comes with no bloatware. Just pull down the notification shade and you will see large side-mounted toggle buttons which are quite easy to spot. The screen brightness slider is also present at the bottom which means it is easy to use if you are using the phone with one hand. Once you click on the volume button, you will see a large slider on the screen.

Oppo has also made some changes to the UI navigation. You can choose between a three-button navigation layout or a two-button navigation system that resembles the stock Android 9 on the Google Pixel 3 series. The Oppo F11 Pro comes pre-installed with apps like Oppo’s App Store, Theme Store, Music Party and Ouroming along with Facebook, UC Browser, PayTM, Wink Music, Dailyhunt, Webnovel, Newspoint, Amazon Shopping and ShareChat. Apart from this, there are also Hot Apps and Hot Games apps which look like folders at first glance but are actually part of the Oppo App Store. Google apps are also pre-installed. There is a lot of bloatware in the device but most of it can be uninstalled.

Oppo F11 Pro Camera

Like the older Oppo smartphones, you will also get a smart driving mode in it which turns on automatically after connecting to the car’s Bluetooth. Riding mode is a new feature that has been added, it mutes everything except incoming calls. Gestures are also available in the phone, you can also open the app by drawing letters on the screen. Oppo has added different power saving modes in the Settings app, these prevent apps from running unnecessarily in the background.
Apart from this, there is also a Super High Power Efficiency mode which closes some background apps, disables automatic data sync, turns off vibration and reduces screen brightness. Sleeping mode saves the phone from draining the battery when the phone is not in use.

Game Space has got a new look, this is a place where you will see all the games installed in the smartphone. This app optimizes your game performance by clearing RAM. If you want, you can also block banner notifications and calls during gaming. It has three modes – High Performance, Balanced and Low Power Consumption. Let us tell you that Oppo Game Engine is compatible with PUBG Mobile. If you want, you can also run two WhatsApp and Facebook simultaneously on the device. For your information, let us tell you that our review unit is also running February 2019 security patch.

Oppo F11 Pro performance, battery life and camera

We have tested the Helio P70 processor in the Realme U1 and the Realme 3 (Review). But the Oppo F11 Pro costs more than both of these models and there isn’t much difference when it comes to performance. The phone doesn’t slow down at all while multitasking. The 6GB of RAM on the phone helps when switching between multiple apps. The camera module pops up every time you unlock the phone using face recognition. In our experience, the selfie camera slides out in less than a second and slides back after scanning the face.

There are two options for face unlock, first when you click on the power button and second when you swipe up the lock screen. Apart from this, the phone increases the screen brightness in the dark so that it can easily recognize the face. The fingerprint sensor of Oppo F11 Pro is very fast and it unlocks the phone quickly.

To measure the performance, we played PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends. The settings for PUBG Mobile are set to Media by default. The graphics are balanced and the frame rate is set to Media. After setting the phone to this setting, you can easily play the game without any problem. We played Asphalt 9 on the default settings but we found that the phone slowed down a bit in the middle. The sound from the loudspeaker is also quite loud, you will be able to enjoy gaming and videos.

The phone is powered by a 4,000mAh battery. In our HD video loop test, the phone provided 20 hours of backup which is quite impressive. Talking about the usage of the phone, our WhatsApp account was active all the time, after playing PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9 Legends for half an hour, running some benchmarks, navigating for two hours with the help of Google Maps and clicking some pictures, the phone still had 46 percent battery left at the end of the day. Let us tell you that we used the phone after turning off all the power-saving modes. You can get better battery life by enabling them. After playing two quick matches of about 11 minutes in PUBG Mobile, we found that the battery was reduced by only 3 percent.

There is a 20 watt VOOC charger in the retail box which charges the 4,000mAh battery very quickly. In the video loop test, we put the phone on charge after the battery was completely drained. The F11 Pro’s battery was charged up to 46 percent in 30 minutes and the phone was fully charged in about 1 hour 45 minutes. We noticed that the charging speed slowed down after 80 percent charge.

Let us remind you that the 48-megapixel primary camera of Oppo F11 Pro was highly advertised. Its aperture is F / 1.79, along with this a 5-megapixel secondary sensor will work. Oppo’s camera software is quite simple and the mode selector is located at the bottom of the screen and quick toggles are given above. Photo, video and portrait modes can be easily accessed, while Pano, Expert, Time Lapse, Slow-mo and Nightscape modes will be found in the sub-menu. Let us tell you that the new Chroma Boost feature comes with a quick toggle.

In the camera app, AI scene recognition will be switched on by default. Beautification feature is also available in the phone and you can change the beautification level as per your wish or you can also turn it off. It has a 48-megapixel primary rear camera but it captures shots at 12 megapixels by default. If you switch to full resolution then you will miss out on features like Chroma Boost, HDR, filters, beautification, AI scene recognition, continuous shooting and zooming.

The phone locks focus quickly while shooting. Photos taken in daylight were crisp and had ample detail. AI scene recognition quickly detects what we are shooting and sets the camera app accordingly. The camera automatically enables HDR when shooting in adverse lighting. Colours are also accurate when shooting in macros mode. Portrait mode maintains the distinction between the subject and the background with the help of the secondary sensor and adds a bokeh effect. However, there is no customisation available to adjust the blur level.

Photos taken at night have low noise which means there are no grains in the output. The phone captures a decent amount of detail, but we found that the Oppo F11 Pro took a little longer to lock focus at night. The Nightscape mode proves to be a useful feature in low light. It takes photos with long exposures. Chroma Boost improves the dynamic range of the photo. We noticed that it also boosts the color a bit.

Photos taken with the 16MP pop-up selfie camera are colour accurate and capture details well. When shooting in adverse lighting conditions, we found that the F11 Pro sometimes overexposed the background. The primary and selfie cameras are capable of recording videos at 1080p, which may disappoint you as other smartphones in this price segment come with 4K video recording support. Image stabilization is available on the device.

Our verdict

Because of the pop-up selfie camera, the Oppo F11 Pro only has a display on the front panel, which gives the phone a modern look. Yes, it has a moving mechanism due to which it can get damaged if dropped or dust can accumulate in it. The battery life of the phone is quite impressive and the VOOC fast charger is capable of charging the phone’s battery quickly. Apart from the pop-up selfie camera and better battery life, there is nothing special in Oppo F11 Pro that makes it different from others. To make the device a profitable deal, the company has provided 128 GB of storage in the phone.

The Realme U1 (Review) also uses the same processor, which starts at Rs 10,999. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 7 Pro (Review) has a better processor but the same battery life and is priced at Rs 14,990. Also available in this price range are the Poco F1 and the Asus ZenFone 5Z, both of which are excellent options. If a pop-up selfie camera isn’t a must for you, there are plenty of other options available.
