Reddit Sues AI Vishal anthropic over content uses | Mint

Social media outlet Reddit on Wednesday filed a case against Artificial Intelligence Company Anthropic, alleging illegally scrapping millions of user comments to train its cloud chatbot without permission or compensation.
California represents the latest front in the growing battle between the case of suit materials and AI companies in the state court, which is on the use of data to train the rapidly sophisticated language models that provide strength to the generative AI revolution.
Anthropic, which is priced at $ 61.5 billion and is heavily supported by Amazon, was established in 2021 by former officials of the chat manufacturer OpenaiI.
The company, which is known for its cloud chatbot and AI models, focuses itself on AI security and responsible development.
“This is the case about the two faces of anthropic: the face of the public who tries to recover itself with claims of righteousness and boundaries and laws for the consciousness of the consumer, and the private face that ignores any rule that intervens to the attempts to pursue his pocket,” said suit.
According to the complaint, the anthropic has been training its models on Reddit content at least December 2021, with CEO Dario Amodi co-written research papers, which specifically identify high quality materials for data training.
The trial alleges that despite the public claims of anthropic that he had stopped his bots from reaching the Redit, the company’s automatic system continued to harvest the servers of Reddit more than 100,000 times in later months.
Reddit is demanding monetary damage and prohibition of a court to force anthropic to follow the terms of its user agreement. The company has requested a jury trial.
In an email to the AFP, Anthropic said “We disagree with the claims of the Redit and will strictly protect ourselves.”
Reddit has entered licensing agreements with other AI giants including Google and Openai, which allow companies to use reddit content under conditions that protect user privacy and provide compensation to platforms.
Those deals have helped to lift the price of Redit’s share since going public in 2024.
Reddit shares closed more than six percent on Wednesday after the news of the trial.
Musicians, book writers, visual artists and news publications have sued various AI companies who used their data without permission or payment.
AI companies generally defend their practices by claiming proper use, arguing that AI training on large datasets basically replace the original material and is essential for innovation.
Although most of these cases are still in the early stages, their results may have a profound impact on the size of the AI industry.
