Opera has introduced a new AI-operated feature, browser operator, designed to automate web browsing tasks for users. The current feature available as a preview enables users to describe tasks in the natural language, allowing the browser to execute autonomy.

The Norwegian technology company claims that the browser operator represents a significant change in the role of web browsers. Instead of acting as an entrance to the Internet only, the latest joint of opera wants to actively complete the complete tasks from the users. According to the company, it can empty the time which will otherwise be spent on regular browsing activities, such as online shopping.

AI-run browsing with user oversight

Opera’s new AI feature allows users to request tasks in everyday language. For example, a user may instruct the browser to buy a specific item of clothing in his favorite size and brand. The browser operator will then carry out the task, in which the users will be able to monitor its progress, intervene or cancel the action at any level.

Unlike some AI-operated browsing tools relying on cloud-based solutions, Opera claims that its browser operators work originally within the browser. This means that the system does not require remote server or virtual machine to process user requests. Opera claims that this approach not only improves performance, but also increases privacy by keeping the user data local on the device. The company says that its AI does not depend on screenshots or video recording of browsing sessions, reducing potential security concerns.

The company re-designed its flagship browser in 2023 and launched its AI feature drops program in March 2024 to focus on AI-operated features. The initiative tests users such as experimental AI abilities such as local language models, image generations, and AI-operated tab commands before rolling users.

Opera has not yet confirmed a full release date for the browser operator, but it is said that it will be included in the future AI feature updates.
