Netflix’s Reid Hastings gives $ 50 million to Bodoin for AI program

Netflix co-founder Reid Hastings wants more researchers and students to ask deep questions about artificial intelligence and ability to meet human norms.

By that end, Mr. Hastings has donated $ 50 million to Bodoin College, its Alma Mater, to create a research initiative on “AI and Humanity” – the biggest gift for Liberal Arts College in Main in 1794 since its establishment, the school announced on Monday.

The purpose of the program, Shri Hastings and school officials said, to study AI’s risks and results is to make Bodoin a maize. The purpose of the initiative is to help students prepare to struggle with emerging technologies that can build human texts and even produce formulas for potential new drug compounds.

The idea for the program has increased from discussion between Mr. Hastings and the Chairman of Bodoin in the last few months, Safa R. ZakiA cognitive scientist, he said. Bodoin plans to use 10 faculty members to use the money to hiring and support “AI” in his teaching and research “to support” professors “.

In an interview, Mr. Hastings said that for more researchers to deal with such questions due to the speed of AI advances and significant disruption, it was necessary for researchers that system could bring human efforts such as work and relationships.

“We are fighting for the existence of humanity and the flourishing of humanity,” said Mr. Hastings. He compared AI to the social network, given that social networking has increased so fast that some people initially understood changes that could bring human conversations and behavior.

“AI change, I think, will be much larger than social networking changes,” Mr. Hastings said. “So it is important that we start early before being overwhelmed by problems.”

Dr. Zaki said he hopes that members and students of the Bodoine Faculty will study fundamental questions about AI and come up with moral framework for their use.

“What does a technique mean that consumes so much power? What does it mean that there is a technique that can increase inequalities in society?” Dr. Zaki asked. “We have a moral imperative, as teachers, to take it, to face AI”

Hundreds of millions of people have started using AI for works such as finding information, email making and generating computer codes. Developers of such devices say that even more powerful AI systems are ready to change daily life.

Some major Silicon Valley leaders have promoted the Rosie Vision of the AI-run future.

The new initiative in Bodoin, where Mr. Hastings obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1983, is to study more briefly how AI can change society, for better or worse. Mr. Hastings said that he hoped that the new program will also help ensure that the development of technology served and benefited people.

He said, “I am an extreme techno-opinion person and see most of the human progress because on the one hand there is technology progress and the progress of moral-ethical systems on the other side,” he said. “Technological progress is moving very well. Improvement in our moral-e-regional system requires some bolting.”
