Meta starts testing ads on threads amid content moderation backlash: What does it mean for users? , peppermint

Meta has started testing ads on its latest social network threads, a significant development for the platform. Launching in the summer of 2023, Threads was introduced as an alternative to Elon Musk’s X.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and Threads, announced the test on Friday, saying the ads were being tested with select brands in the United States and Japan. “We’re starting a small test with some brands for ads on threads,” Mosseri said. He said his team will monitor user feedback to ensure the ads are tailored to the type of content that users find relevant and engaging.

The move to introduce advertisements was widely anticipated, given Meta’s reliance on advertising revenue on its free platforms. However, there has been criticism of the timing, coming soon after Meta relaxed its content moderation policies and ending its US fact-checking program.

These decisions, interpreted by many as an attempt to appease conservative critics, have raised concerns over the potential spread of misinformation. Critics argue that the new approach reflects X’s more liberal stance on controversial content under Musk’s leadership.

According to eMarketer analyst Jasmine Enberg, the simultaneous introduction of ads and changes to content moderation may raise concerns among advertisers. “The launch of Threads ads just weeks after Meta’s content moderation changes will raise advertisers’ eyebrows,” Enberg said. He predicted skepticism from users already wary of Meta’s practices, but noted that Threads could benefit as brands look for alternatives to TikTok amid its uncertain future in the United States.

Chinese-owned video-sharing platform TikTok has faced increasing scrutiny in the US over fears of data abuse and foreign influence. While the ban on TikTok was scheduled to take effect on January 19, it has been temporarily delayed by former President Donald Trump, who is seeking a settlement with Beijing.

Meta claims Threads has 300 million monthly users, but the figures have been challenged. Critics allege that redirecting Instagram users to threads without explicit consent could artificially inflate the platform’s user base.
