Malayalam filmmaker Shafi dies at 56

Filmmaker Shafi, known for bringing laughter to the Malayali audience through his popular films, died at a private hospital in Kochi on Saturday midnight.
He was 56 years old.
According to hospital sources, Rasheed MH, known as Shafi, was undergoing treatment after suffering a stroke on January 16 and remained in a critical condition for several days before his demise.
Sources said he breathed his last at 12.25 am.
Actor Vishnu Annikrishnan confirmed the news by sharing a post on his Facebook page.
He said, “Shafi sir has left behind laughter and unforgettable stories, which will be cherished forever.”
Shafi, who started his career as an assistant director under noted filmmaker Rajasenan, made his mark in the Malayalam film industry with his debut film, ‘One Man Show’ in 2001.
During a career spanning two decades, Shafi directed ten films, earning praise for his expertise in comedy.
Her collaboration with actor Dileep led to several blockbusters, including ‘Kalyanaraman’, ‘Marikundoru Kunjaadu’ and ‘Two Country’.
His other famous works are ‘Pulival Kalyanam’, ‘Thomamanam Makkalum’, ‘Mayavi’, and ‘Chatambinadu’, cementing his reputation as a leading director in Malayalam cinema.
His last directorial venture was the 2022 film ‘Anandam Paramanandam’.
According to family sources, his body was shifted to his residence on BTS Road, here. It will be kept at Cochin Service Ko-Ko-Kalur, Kaloor on Sunday from 9 am to 12 noon for the public to pay their last respects.
The family has scheduled a 4pm funeral mass on Sunday at the Kaloor Muslim Juma Masjid.
Shafi’s elder brother, Rafi, is part of the famous writer-director duo Rafi-McCartin, while his uncle was the late renowned filmmaker Siddiq.
