At a time when family audiences are expected to be entertained by gore and violence, which seems to be the genre of choice for superstars, what can’t help but remind those family dramas for those who grew up in the 80s and 90s? Difficult, which attracted the audience. Crowds gathered in theaters. Artists like K Balachander, Visu, V Shekhar and Bhagyaraj filled their filmography with films suitable for family audiences. Although he played to his strengths and his films had a variety of themes, the common thread – at least in most cases – was a realistic depiction of contemporary middle-class life. Manikandan with YouTube channel director Rajeshwar Kalisamy Nakalites fame, have teamed up to give us a piece of a bygone era ‘Kudumba Padangal’ It discusses present-day issues that have evolved over the years and the film pretty much delivers what it aims to do.

KudumbasthanFollows the trials and tribulations of Naveen (Manikandan), a newly married youth who, as the sole earning member of his family, leads a pay-to-paycheck life due to an onslaught of commitments. If his mother wants him to sponsor his pilgrimage, his father wants him to renovate their dilapidated house. While his pregnant wife Vennila (Sanve Meghna) is preparing for her civil services examination, resulting in Naveen facing many expenses, his niece’s ear piercing ceremony means he has to give gifts to his sister’s baby. Will have to do anything for. If that’s not enough, Naveen is keen to make it big because of his brother-in-law Rajendran (Guru Somasundaram), who loves to assert dominance and tear them down. Walking a tightrope, Naveen has to shoulder many responsibilities as life teaches him why changing the system is futile and how becoming a cog within this dysfunctional machine is inevitable.

Manikandan with back-to-back hits – Good nightAnd Lover – Looks like he’s in the Midas touch and his winning streak continues kudumbasthanLike most of his previous films, he plays a relatable, boy-next-door character who has to fight his odds not to win but to survive. Rajeshwar Kalisamy brings his flavor Nakalites More than the feel-good nature of the channel and film on the big screen, it’s the humor that stands out KudumbasthanUSP of. Set in the filmmaker’s tried and tested Kongu region, the film feels like a mash-up of Nuckalights skits strung together and that’s both a blessing and a curse for the film.

Kudumbasthan (Tamil)

Director: Rajeshwar Kalisamy

Mould: Manikandan, Guru Somasundaram, Sanve Meghagana, R Sundararajan

Runtime: 155 minutes

Story: A newly married middle-class youth’s life and peace of mind are ruined as he succumbs to the pressure of being a family man.

Although it may take a few moments to sink into its world of Kudumbasthan Humor, once you become a part of it, the barrage of jokes keeps the waves of laughter flowing. There are some hilarious parts in the film – like when Naveen is really penniless but needs to buy a chicken, or when his parents get ready for their 60th wedding celebration, or even That even a small scene featuring a character locked inside a room. Shining Reference. Interestingly, with so many characters making their presence felt in one film, the best scenes are the ones in which Naveen is alone in the bathroom talking to himself with his thoughts and words. The riotous scenes felt like a hat-tip to Janagaraj’s famous comedy scenes Anna Nagar Mudhal Theru,

More than the obvious jabs, it’s the little touches of Rajeshwar Kalisamy and Prasanna Balachandran who have written the story and screenplay. The first scene shows Naveen and Vanilla running away while a church speaker is preaching about love. The film uses songs liberally to take a dig at our hero’s situation – mostly in a satirical manner. A personal favorite is how Naveen’s malfunctioning car audio system plays the track ‘Lesa Lesa’ on its own as if it takes pity on its owner’s difficult life and another scene where Naveen enters his friends’ house and He sees them drunk and also plays music with them. The dead bodies make it look like a Renaissance painting. The set-up and payoff on the writing front come to fruition in many places – the stretches where Naveen and his friends meet a tire puncture shop owner or the way he uses the friendship of his new found park companions, They are good examples of this.

Whether these wonderful visuals come together to make a well-rounded film is another question because this is Kudumbasthan Falters. The film doesn’t warrant its 155-minute runtime and once we get past its hilarious parts, the back-to-back hiccups that drain the living daylights out of our lives are too much for us. But have a huge impact. Like most comedies, some jokes don’t land the way they were intended.

In a subplot, Naveen’s family constantly taunts his wife for being from an oppressed community. While the film’s attempt at honestly portraying a woman’s issues in an inter-caste marriage is commendable, some of the “jokes” at this cost leave a bad taste. Speaking of subplots, the companion characters’ arcs could have benefited from more attention; Be it Vanilla’s spontaneous reactions in certain scenes or another character’s change of heart despite initially wanting a divorce feels inorganic. The climax sequence where several knots are unraveled, which sounds like a good idea on paper, does not translate convincingly on screen.

But it is the performance of Manikandan and Guru Somasundaram in a few scenes, which takes the film to victory. Manikandan plays the role of an underdog and the actor has done a phenomenal job of portraying a man who faces the biggest challenges of life but at the same time, enjoys the small joys that life brings. The final section where he changes from being straight into a crooked system to being as broken as the system itself makes us wish the film had more to offer on this front. Guru has always been impressive and he plays the role of an arrogant madman with ease. kudumbasthan is technically strong and how Sujith N Subramaniam’s cinematography and Kannan Balu’s editing work together demands special mention. In one scene, a character spills some sand to form a pile and the shot cuts to the same character pouring ketchup over samosas. kudumbasthan It’s full of other cuts like this and they add to the mood of the film.

kudumbasthanLike most families, it has its flaws and shortcomings. But like the words of inspiration that come from a mother’s loving hand or a father’s care, this film comes across as a gentle affirmation that there is much more to Tamil cinema than just action and violence.
