Google Cloud strengthens backup service with Vault

Backup and recovery are critical in catastrophic cases affecting an organization’s entire Google Cloud account. Having an untouched, logically air-gapped version adds a layer of assurance for high-stakes data.

On September 10, Google Cloud strengthened its backup and disaster recovery services with an immutable vault.

The service is currently in preview mode, but it will be available to Google Cloud customers in 2020. Parts of America, parts of Europe and Taiwan The tech giant made the announcement “in the coming months.”

The new backup and recovery service is logically air-gapped

The Backup Vault feature stands out by being immutable, which means the data cannot be modified, and indelible, which ensures it cannot be deleted. Data is inserted into the Backup Vault from the backup and DR service and stored securely to avoid a cyberattack or critical error. Users within the originating organization also cannot access the Backup Vault.

Administrators can configure a retention period during which the vault cannot be modified.

Projects using Google’s Compute Engine VM can also store their data in the new vaults. Vault sources are not tied to the project and can be based in Compute Engine VMs, VMware Engine VMs, Oracle databases, or SQL Server databases.

The process of backing up Compute Engine VMs can begin as soon as they are created, integrated into the VM provisioning process. According to Google, this is aligned with Google Cloud Identity and Access Management policies, making setup streamlined and more secure.

Create and manage Google Compute Engine VMs

Admins and app developers can manually inspect scheduled backup and restore jobs, generate reports on failed or skipped jobs, and receive alerts for important backup-related events. To create backups with a Compute Engine VM, admins simply need to define a backup plan within Google Cloud.

The other option, instead of doubling up on your Google Cloud backups, is to adopt a multi-cloud system, which has its own benefits – as seen here UniSuper Outage due to the loss of their Google Cloud account And Backup to earlier this year.
