Vishvopam

Raj Kamal Films International challenged the ban in the Madras High Court. Justice K. Venkataraman, in late night interim order, remained on the government’s decision. But Mr. Haasan’s relief was short-lived-the state government challenged the next morning’s decision. The first bench, which included acting Chief Justice Elip Dharma Rao and Justice Aruna Jagadisin, reinstated the ban through an interim order.

Then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa defended the ban, stating that it was only due to law and order concerns and was not out of sympathy with Muslim organizations. He later said: “The Tamil Nadu government will make every effort to facilitate such an agreement. There is no question of curbing the freedom of speech.”

Producers and opposing groups agreed to talk, requested the government to take care of them. The film industry held a rally around Mr. Haasan, who was in disappointment, announced that he would go on self-control.

Eventually, a success was achieved. The Advocate General informed the High Court that the ban under Section 144 of the CRPC was lifted under the agreements given by the government in a tripartite meeting between Mr. Haasan and the protesters. The film finally released on 7 February 2013 in Tamil Nadu – about a month after its original release date.
