Facebook’s new Friends Tab app brings back to its roots

Last year, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s Chief Executive Officer and one of their top lieutenants, Tom Alison were discussing how they wanted to re -shape Facebook for the future of social networking.
Mr. Zuckerberg, who had grown Facebook from a dorm room project to a $ 1.5 trillion company, which he changed the name of Meta, wanted to bring back some original arguments for social networks, or he said “OG Facebook” Vibes, Mr. Alison said in an interview. After years of connecting the facilities, the authorities realized that some of the major Facebook works were being immersed.
So he asked himself: Why not try to create some characteristics that are slightly more than your Facebook?
On Thursday, Meta did this much with a simple twee. The company said that the Facebook app will now include a separate news feed for users who particularly portray the posts shared by friends and family.
The feature called Friends Tab will replace a tab in the app that shown new friend requests or suggested friends. Friends tab will instead scrolling feeds of posts such as photos, video stories, text, birthday notifications and friend requests. For now, it will only be available to Facebook users in the United States and Canada.
“What is happening to your friends, this idea of having a central place, which was like the magic of the early days of social media,” said Mr. Alison, the head of the Facebook app. “We are sure that there is still a place for this stuff on Facebook. This is something that should not be lost in the modern social media mixture.”
The new feed is a sharp departure from the way social media developed in the last decade. The rise of apps like Tiktok made a habit to see the posts in their feed from those who affected users and material creators, often people from whom they had never met. Other companies followed the suit. Meta apps, including Instagram, began to bend more heavy on the recommended material for people to stay for a long time.
Now people see apps like YouTube, Instagram and Tiktok as some more for television-a lean-pain experience, which is fuel by a small number of creators, producing hours of entertainment for the rest of the Internet.
Not all have welcomed the innings. When Mr. Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004, it aims to help college students join the campus with their friends. As the app became more popular, it became about helping every user up to date with friends and family positions.
So when Mr. Zuckerberg announced in 2022 that Meta would include recommended materials from those on Facebook who were not connected to the user, many users were revolting. Many people initially found the recommended material – which depended on artificial intelligence for surface tips – nervousness. Following some criticisms, Mr. Zuckerberg left behind the amount of such materials added to the people’s Facebook feed.
Nevertheless, it did not prevent the meta from embracing the algorithm recommended material. In recent years, more people’s feeds on Facebook and Instagram dominated the creators, businesses and brands. Recommended materials such as reels, meta video products inspired people to spend more time on apps, the company said.
Meta has no plans to prevent users from adding the recommended material to the feed, Mr. Ellison said in the interview. For now, the company does not expect that the Friends tab will be more popular than the home feed of the recommended material.
And there is a possibility of more changes in Facebook. Meta has planned to introduce other facilities and updates on Facebook in the coming year to “feel social media”, Mr. Alison said.
“This is clearly, the core for Facebook,” he said.
