Deepsek AI app removed from Italian App Store Data Privacy Check | Mint

The Chinese Artificial Intelligence App, Deepsak has been temporarily removed from the Apple and Google App Store in Italy after request by the country’s data protection authority for more information about the handling of personal data. The expulsion of the app on Wednesday, the Italian regulator, came just a day after the guarantee, increased concerns about the possible violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Deepsek, which launched a free AI assistant last week, quickly received traction to overtake the chat in download numbers at Apple’s app store by Monday. The app claims to use much less data on a fraction of its rivals and offer services, creating interest in the technical market. However, the increase in popularity increased the alarm bell between regulators across Europe.

The inquiry of the couint is focused on several major aspects of the operation of Deepsek. The authority seeks clarification on what the app collects individual data, its source, legal basis to process data, and whether it is stored in China. Additionally, regulators relate to the protection of minors, prevention of algorithm bias and the ability to intervene, especially with upcoming national elections.

The Italian data regulator gave 20 days to Dipsek and its affiliated companies to respond to their inquiry. While the app was drawn from the app store in Italy, it still seems functional for users who had previously downloaded it. Additionally, Dipsec is available for download in other European Union countries and the United Kingdom.

The Data Protection Commission of Ireland (DPC) has also sought information from Deepsek about the processing of data of Irish users. As the lead EU regulator for many large American tech firms, Ireland’s DPC plays an important role in the supervision of data secrecy matters throughout the continent. However, Deepsek has not chosen Ireland as its European Union headquarters, which complicates cases for the jurisdiction of DPC.

As the investigation continues, both Deepsek and the comprehensive AI sector will be closely monitored to comply with the European Union data protection laws.

In Germany, officials are also cautious for potential AI-run intervention in public opinion before the national elections on 23 February, highlighting the growing concerns over the use of AI technology in Europe.
