Need space?
To start a vermicompost unit, you must have a free space. The place where you want to install the vermicompost unit should not be waterlogged by rain or any other reason. To start a vermicompost unit, you will need animal dung, earthworms, polythene sheets and paddy straw or any other straw that can cover the dung. You can easily get free cow dung from any cow shed or animal dairy. You have to get it from there.

How to get started
Cover the area where you want to make vermicompost to prevent animals from getting there. Get a long polythene seat from the market. Cut it into 2 meters width and length according to your space. Level the ground and spread the seat on it. Now apply a layer of cow dung on it. After that scatter earthworms on it and then add cow dung. Cow dung should not be more than 1.5 feet high.

After doing all this, cover it well with paddy straw or any other grass. Maintain the moisture content of cow dung. Also, do not spray any kind of insecticide on it and do not allow snakes and rats to come on it. Earthworms will convert cow dung into vermicompost in about two months. When the compost is ready, strain it and separate the earthworms from it.

How much will it cost?
You can start vermicompost business by investing 50 thousand rupees. Most of it is spent on mud. Earthworms are available for around Rs 1000 per kg. But the special thing is that earthworms grow very fast and their number doubles in about three months. So, if you buy worms once and expand your business, you won’t need to buy earthworms. Apart from mud, you will also need to buy cow dung, plastic seat and paddy straw. Since these things are not very expensive, you will not have to spend a lot on them.
