Coolpad Mega 3 and Coolpad Note 3S first look
The first question that came to our mind about Coolpad Mega 3 is whether there is a demand among users for a smartphone with three SIMs? Talking about the strategy of providing this feature at the event, a spokesperson of Coolpad said that mobile operators are now introducing new offers for customers every month. And with a device like Coolpad Mega 3, users will be able to fulfill their needs in a single phone. Along with this, Coolpad India CEO Syed Tajuddin said that with Coolpad Mega 3, users will be able to use different operators for better connectivity.
It is worth noting that Coolpad Mega 3 is not the only smartphone that supports three SIMs. Earlier, Acer Liquid X2 and LG Optimus L11 II Tri have also been launched with this feature. But these phones have not been launched in India yet.
It will be interesting to see how much customers like Coolpad Mega 3 and its three SIM feature. Because when it comes to choosing an operator for voice calls and messages, there is confusion even in dual SIM devices. On the other hand, dual SIM has been provided as an essential feature in most Android smartphones for the last several years. The special thing is that Coolpad Mega 3 has a microSD card slot in addition to three SIM card slots. If compared to those smartphones that come with hybrid SIM slots (two SIM cards or one SIM card and one microSD card slot), then Coolpad has definitely tried something different with this feature.
Apart from this unique feature, the Coolpad Mega 3 smartphone is pretty much a standard design phone. It sports a 5.5-inch HD (720×1080 pixels) IPS display with a pixel density of 269 ppi. The screen on the Coolpad Mega 3 is clearly usable even in daylight and text looks crisp. We found the display to be dull even with the maximum brightness set to normal, but viewing angles were good. Measuring 8.3mm thick, the Coolpad Mega 3 isn’t the thinnest phone we’ve seen and weighing 170 grams, we found it a bit heavy. The Coolpad Mega 3 is easy to operate with one hand and we were able to easily move the phone up and down with just our thumb.
The phone has a volume rocker button on the right side while the power button is on the left side. The buttons work well. The rear of the Coolpad Mega 3 is made of plastic and can be removed to reveal the battery, three SIM slots and a microSD card slot.
The Coolpad Mega 3 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the company’s CoolEye skin on top. The UI doesn’t have an app drawer which means all the app icons are placed on the homescreen. The Coolpad Mega 3 unit we got didn’t have too many games preloaded. The phone packs a 3050mAh battery and supports 4G VoLTE which means it will work on the Reliance Jio network.
In the time we spent with the Coolpad Mega 3, we found that the phone has good touch response and multitasking can also be done quickly. This phone has a 1.25 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6737 processor and 2 GB of RAM. The Mega 3 smartphone has 16 GB inbuilt storage which can be expanded up to 64 GB via microSD card.
Coolpad Mega 3 has 8 megapixel rear and front camera. Both cameras come with aperture f / 2.2. We noticed that the camera app of Mega 3 works fast and it launches without any delay. We found the photos taken in daylight to be great. The color reproduction in them was good but there was a lack of detail. Photos taken with the front camera of Coolpad Mega 3 were also decent. Stay tuned for a detailed review of this smartphone.
Now let’s talk about Coolpad Note 3S. The design of this smartphone is also similar to Coolpad Note 3. The overall look is simple and the front is dominated by the display. There is a fingerprint sensor on the rear. With a thickness of 8.6 mm, Coolpad Note 3S is thinner than its predecessor which was 9.3 mm thick. But it is heavier than Coolpad Note 3 which weighs 155 grams and weighs 167 grams.
The Coolpad Note 3S has a 5.5-inch HD (720×1080 pixels) IPS display just like the Note 3. However, the company has also provided 2.5D glass in the new Note 3S. The display is bright and the color reproduction is also good. The Coolpad Note 3S runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with CoolUA 8.0 skin on top. This skin seems well customized and many new icon sets are seen in it.
Coolpad Note 3S has a 13-megapixel rear camera with aperture f / 2.2. While a 5-megapixel fixed focus front camera with aperture f / 2.2 has been given. It is worth noting that the same camera specifications were given in Coolpad Note 3. The camera app of Coolpad Note 3S is easy to operate and many options are available with a single tap. Photo, video, beauty, pro and night modes are given in the camera app. Photos taken in daylight looked good and bright. However, on zooming we saw noise on the edges of the pictures. Selfies taken with the front camera of Coolpad Note 3S are great.
Coolpad Note 3S has an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 415 processor. The phone has 3 GB of RAM. We saw that the apps launch quickly in the phone and the touch also gives a good response. The Note 3S smartphone has 32 GB of inbuilt storage and it can be expanded up to 32 GB via microSD card.
To power the Coolpad Note 3S, a 2500mAh battery has been provided. The company claims that it will provide up to 200 hours of standby time. However, we were disappointed with the decision to reduce the battery capacity in the Note 3S. Whereas the Coolpad Note 3 was provided with a larger battery of 3000mAh.
Final Thoughts
Coolpad Mega 3 and Coolpad Note 3S are priced at Rs 6,999 and Rs 9,999 respectively. The sale of both these variants will start from December 7 and these phones will be available exclusively on Amazon India. Now it remains to be seen how much people in India like the three-smart Coolpad Mega 3. Coolpad Note 3 is an upgraded variant of the popular Note family. Both the new smartphones will face tough competition from Moto E3 Power, Xiaomi Redmi 3S and other smartphones of similar price already present in the market.
