Coolpad Cool 1 Dual Review

The year 2016 is nearing its end, smartphones are still being launched in the mid-range segment. After Lenovo launched the K6 Note smartphone, Coolpad and LeEco have launched the Cool 1 Dual in India in partnership. The phone was first launched in China in August. At this time, LeEco CEO Jia Yueting had just taken over as Coolpad’s chairman.

Cool 1 Dual will be available in India for Rs 13,999. It will be available on offline as well as online platforms. The online version will come with 4 GB RAM. At the same time, the variant with 3 GB RAM will be available in offline stores. The rest of the specifications of both variants will be the same. The phone will compete with Moto G4 Plus (Review) and Xiaomi Mi Max (Review). Will Cool 1 Dual be liked by the users? Let’s find out…

Coolpad Cool 1 Dual design and build
The design is nothing new and doesn’t impress much, but the build quality is reliable. The metal body feels sturdy and the matte finish prevents fingerprints. The quality and position of the buttons is also good. The Cool 1 Dual is a bit heavy and a bit thick due to the large battery.

The 5.5-inch IPS display comes with full-HD resolution. Its bezel is not very thin. It is on all four sides of the display and is also quite wide. The viewing angles of the panel are good. Color reproduction and brightness levels are also suitable. Sometimes it is not easy to read the screen in direct sunlight. To protect it from scratches, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection is present on it.

The backlit capacitive buttons are at the bottom of the navigation. The notification LED is at the top. There is a dual nano SIM tray on the left. Unfortunately, the handset does not have a microSD card slot. If the inbuilt storage of Cool 1 Dual was 64 GB, then it would not have been a problem. But 32 GB will seem less for a day.

Cool 1 Dual has an infrared emitter on the top. Next to it is a 3.5mm audio socket. The USB Type-C port is at the bottom of the phone. Along with it is a speaker grill. There is also a fingerprint sensor on the back. This is a good feature for the security of the phone. Its design and position are such that you will not have any problem using it. Cool 1 Dual is another phone in its price segment that comes with dual cameras. Earlier, Lenovo Fab 2 Plus (Review) was launched.

In the retail box, you will find a screen guard, data cable, 10W power adapter, SIM ejector and instruction manual. The Cool 1 Dual has a good build quality and feels sturdy. I wish it had a microSD card slot or a hybrid SIM slot.

Coolpad Cool 1 Dual specifications and features
The Cool 1 Dual is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 chipset. It is a faster version of the processor used in the Redmi Note 3. We got the 4GB RAM variant for review. Other specifications include Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, USB-OTG, FM radio, and GPS. The phone supports 4G LTE on both SIM slots. And you can activate the Voice over LTE feature in the settings. We were unable to make voice calls on the Jio network with the review unit. But there was no problem with data.

You will realise Leico’s craftsmanship when you run the software. Cool 1 Dual uses EUI instead of Cool UI. We have encountered this user interface in Leico’s previous phones. Both OS are exactly the same, but Leico’s super entertainment streaming services are missing.

If you have not used a Leica phone before, it will take some time to get used to the EUI as its layout is quite different from Android. Functions and customizations are the same as before. You will find some useful apps pre-installed.

Coolpad Cool 1 Dual Performance
Cool 1 Dual handles multitasking and general performance with ease. Thanks to the fast octa-core chipset and adequate RAM, the phone never lagged while launching apps or playing games. Games with powerful graphics like Asphalt 8 ran smoothly. The benchmark results of the handset were also good. You will not complain about the phone getting too hot. The phone did get hot while charging and running powerful apps.

Media playback is also good. The chipset handles 4K videos with ease. There is a speaker at the bottom of the phone. The speaker produces satisfactory sound for media and alerts. You can get better sound from headphones. The stock music player has a good design.

The Cool 1 Dual has two 13-megapixel rear cameras. One of these is a colour sensor and the other is used for monochrome data. When used together, you can expect better image quality and low noise photos in low light. But in use, this camera duo did not always deliver the expected results. There was noise in low light photos. Detail was also generally very low. Switching on Night mode improved the colours, but not by much. In daylight, we often complained of overexposure in landscape and close-up shots. Colours came out well, but the subjects were not sharp.

You will be able to record videos in 4K resolution. The footage came out well in daylight. But videos in low light were a bit grainy. The 8-megapixel secondary camera is good enough for selfies. However, this will require proper lighting.

The camera focuses quickly and images are stored quickly. The camera app is easy to use. You will have many options to choose from.

The Cool 1 Dual did not disappoint in terms of battery life. The 4000mAh battery lasted 14 hours and 43 minutes in our HD video loop test. The battery lasted about a day and a half in normal use. The phone charges fast.

Our verdict
The Coolpad Cool 1 Dual offers good performance for its price. It has a good build quality and a sharp display. Battery life is great and it has enough power for a variety of tasks. The lack of a microSD card slot is a let down. If you want to buy, do it online and you will get more RAM at the same price.
