ChatGPT can now schedule tasks in advance
Starting January 14, some ChatGPT customers can use generative AI to set reminders or add to their routines. For example, OpenAI said, ChatGPT could provide weekly news briefings or daily weather reports. Content will be delivered as notifications on desktop (macOS), browser and mobile.
What does the Tasks feature do in ChatGPT?
Contents
The Tasks feature instructs ChatGPT to create content at a certain date and time. This content can be preset reminders – such as “department meeting” – or newly created text such as a confirmation or a summary of news.
ChatGPT can suggest tasks based on conversations. Users can set up to 10 tasks while the feature is in beta.
How to set a task or reminder in ChatGPT
Available to Work Plus, Team or Pro-level customers.
To access it, select “4o with fixed functions” in the model picker. Users at these levels can create tasks through ChatGPT on the web, on the desktop application, or in the mobile app. However, the Task Manager pane is only available through ChatGPT on web browsers.
In the Tasks management pane, users can specify specific dates when the Tasks feature should send them reminders. Settings for recurring reminders are also found in the Task Management pane. While task instructions are given as natural language prompts, the date selection in the Task Manager dashboard appears to be a traditional drop-down menu.
OpenAI plans to eventually release the feature for free at all levels of the company said on x On 14th January.

OpenAI’s move towards agentic AI
The tasks in ChatGPT continue the trend in generative AI of “agent” tools, which autonomously combine multiple signals together to perform relatively complex tasks. The function’s ability to remind users of upcoming meetings could compete with Google Calendar, Apple’s Siri or Mobile Calendar, or Amazon Alexa.
The difference between the tasks feature and a traditional calendar or task list can be seen most clearly in the more creative-sounding capabilities of generative AI. For example, one prompt from OpenAI is “Start my day with a daily affirmation at 7 am.” It’s agentic in the sense that it combines multiple signals: sending a reminder every day at 7 a.m. and generating a confirmation.

Still, with the functions ChatGPT replicates what existing technology can do, the added challenge of the generative aspect potentially introduces inaccuracies and misunderstandings. Older apps can send reminders without using much energy and resources.
Meanwhile, both Google and Microsoft announced changes to the way they package generative AI on January 15. Microsoft added agents – based on OpenAI’s GPT-4o – to the commercial tier of Microsoft 365. Google adds Gemini Advanced and Notebook LM Plus to Google Workspace Business. And it will be added to the enterprise tier at the end of January.
