Begum Parveen Sultana is 75. His cheeks may be less round but his smile remains intact. He is wearing equally beautiful and striking clothes, which includes a string of Jasmine, admiring her hair as before. Most importantly, his enchanting voice seems to be untouched over time.
Performance for Bhoomija Foundation Holi! Recently in Bengaluru, Begum said: “What is Omar Meen Song… Jaan Nikal Jati Han! , (Tired of singing at this age) However, when he started singing in a full house in the Prestige Center for Performing Arts (PCPA), hardly anyone felt any tension in his voice – it easily crossed Ashtakos.
Parveen Sultana visit Bangalore at least twice a year, one of which is to perform at the prestigious Sri Ramanwami Global Music Festival in Chamrajpet.
Hearing his song, I got away from indifference. It brought alive memories of HMV recording, which introduced me to his amazing singing of Rags Salagwati, Thodi, Lalith, Nandkons and Mangal Bhairav.
The discussion after her concerts usually focuses around her ability to sing on a high pitch. But there is a lot in his voice, as is seen in this concert-coming out, quick body and uninterrupted modulation.
Parveen Sultana started with Puria Dhanashree (Bandish ‘Lagi Mori Lagaan’). In her specific style, she took the audience from the early notes that had a grandeur about her. He discovered the lower octas with firm belief, lending the song an aggressive quality, even his voice placed the perfect speed with the tone. In Drut Bandish, ‘Peliaya Jhankar More’, Tans were sharp and marked with clarity.
He embellished the composition with tonal variations, his fiery aesthetics is not just a show of his skills, indicating his thought process.
Begum Parveen Sultana’s concert was a good mix of technology and spirit
Parveen Sultana followed it with the traditional Thmaris, especially to invite the colors and moods of the spring. ‘Kaiz Kari Barjori Shyam’ set for Rag Mishra Kafee. It began with a slow speed, capturing the contemplative nature of beautiful songs, but reached the climax very fast. Then a Surdas bhajan came – a complex composition, with unexpected turns, again in raga Mishra Khai.
Can there ever be a concert without an evergreen song, ‘Hamin Tumse Pyaar Kitana’ composed by Emitual RD Burman? He must have sung the song a thousand times, yet it seemed fresh. That evening, he recalled the rehearsal and recording of the song in 1981 and was full of praise for the musician.
The music values he had brought in his singing was made a gem as Parveen Sultana’s ‘Bhavani Dayani’ (Raga Bhairavi).
Eminent Ravindra Katoti on the hormonium and Ojas Adiya on the tabla provided Vineet Sangat.
