Australia joined Italy, Ireland, by banning Deepsek AI on security concerns. Mint

Australia has banned all Deepsek AI services from government systems and equipment, citing national security risks. This decision makes Australia one of the first nation to take direct action against Chinese Artificial Intelligence Start-up, which has rapidly attracted global attention.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced the ban on Tuesday, saying that all Deepsek products, applications and services would be removed from government systems with immediate effect. The step follows an evaluation by the Australian intelligence agencies, which determined that the AI technology took an unacceptable risk.
The Deepsek, which was installed in Hangzo just 20 months ago, made headlines in January with its AI chatboat, which performed advanced arguments capabilities. The mobile app quickly climbed the global download chart, taking into account their ability to distribute complex reactions without the need for adequate computing power. However, concerns about data security soon faced its success.
Burke emphasized that the government’s decision was not based on the company’s Chinese origin, but at the risks arising for Australia’s national security. “AI is a potential and opportunity -filled technology, but the government will not hesitate to work when our agencies identify a national security risk,” he said. He said the approach was “country-unconcerned and focused at risk for the Australian government and our property.”
While the sanctions strictly apply to government systems, Burke encouraged Australian citizens to be vigilant about their online data security. “We urge all Australians to understand their online presence and take steps to protect their privacy,” he said.
Australia is not alone in investigating the operation of Deepsac. Italy’s privacy regulator has already blocked the service for the protection of consumer data, while Ireland’s Data Protection Commission is investigating the company. Additionally, many private firms worldwide have pre -affected access to Deepsek amidst security concerns.
The decision echoes the ban on Australia’s 5G infrastructure on Huawei technologies in 2018, which triggers diplomatic tension with China. However, relations between the two countries have seen reforms under Prime Minister Anthony Albani’s government since May 2022.
