Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav on Thursday launched the AI ​​Comput Portal in New Delhi. The platform is designed to provide researchers, startups and government agencies with access to high-intended computing resources including advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) for Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications.

At the launch, Vaishnav announced that the government is in the process of establishing 27 AI data laboratories. He also said that applications were received to develop the founder AI model and are currently subject to reviews.

With the approval of Indiai Mission in 2024, the government has allocated 10,300 million billion in five years to increase AI capabilities. A major part of this initiative is a shared computing feature with 18,693 GPUs, making it one of the largest AI calculations infrastructure globally. This capacity is about nine times that is used by the open-source AI model deepsek and about two-thirds of computing power used by chat.

The initial rollout has provided 10,000 GPUs, which is expected to further expand. The infrastructure aims to support the development of AI solutions to suit India’s diverse linguistic and cultural scenario.

India has also introduced an open GPU market to provide similar access to high-demonstration computing resources. Unlike some countries where AI Infrastructure dominates major corporations, the initiative aims to provide resources for a wide range of users including startups and researchers.

To ensure a stable supply chain, the government has included 10 companies to provide GPU. Additionally, there are plans to develop an indigenous GPU within the next three to five years, reducing dependence on imported technology.

The Ministry of Electronics and the new general computing facility will provide GPU access to a subsidy rate of £ 1 per hour, which is much lower than the global cost of £ 2 to £ 2 2.40 per hour.

In parallel, India is expanding its semiconductor manufacturing sector, with currently five semiconductor plants under construction. These efforts are expected to support AI development by contributing to India’s electronics industry.
