First look of Yu Utopia smartphone, know what is special
The design of Yu Utopia is largely inspired by other handsets of Yu Televentures. This smartphone has a metal body and its thinnest part is 7.2 mm. Yu Utopia feels good in the hand and is easy to grip.
The rear camera and dual-tone LED flash are housed in a raised circular ring. At first glance, it reminds one of the Nokia Lumia 1020. The fingerprint sensor is placed below the camera. You will see the speaker grille along with the brand’s logo at the bottom. The volume and power buttons are on the right and the SIM card slot is on the left. The headphone jack is on the top and the micro-USB port is at the bottom.
Yu Utopia is equipped with a 5.2 inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) OGS screen. Its pixel density is 565 ppi. The sharpness and color saturation of the display are satisfactory. The text looks crisp when zoomed in. There is no problem in typing on it with one hand.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset has been used in the Yu Utopia and 4GB of RAM makes multitasking easy. We were able to easily use about 20 apps simultaneously and we did not face any problem. Games like Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 5 ran smoothly on the smartphone. We have not been able to test its processor in detail, so it would be wrong to reach any conclusion. For this you will have to wait for our review. The inbuilt storage of the handset is 32 GB, out of which 25 GB will be available to the user. This is not a problem, because the handset also has support for microSD card (up to 128 GB).
The 21-megapixel rear camera has a Sony Exmor RS IMX230 sensor, True-Tone dual-LED flash, 5P lens and optical image stabilization. However, in the limited time we spent with the handset, we found that the rear camera does not perform as expected. Photos taken in adequate light and sunlight were good. But photos taken in low light were not satisfactory. The camera was repeatedly taking the ISO level to the maximum level, due to which more grains were visible in its photos compared to other handsets. The camera takes some time to take photos in HDR mode. The brightness in it is high, due to which the effects look unnatural on some photos.
The front camera comes with an 8-megapixel sensor. This will prove useful for casual users.
The Yu Utopia will run on Cyanogen OS 12.1 which is based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Users also have the option to choose the stock Android UI. This can be activated while setting up the handset, or later. Operating any function is easy in both modes.
The Utopia has a 3000mAh battery that supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charging 2.0 technology. Yu says that the Utopia’s battery will charge from zero to 60 percent in just 30 minutes. We will also check its battery life in the review.
The fingerprint sensor is not satisfactory. We had to tap it about 15 times to setup the fingerprint. Despite this, there were many problems in unlocking the phone. We found it better to use the old lock pattern. The sound from the speaker at the rear was a little low. If you hold the handset in your hands while watching a video, the sound will be muffled.
Utopia comes with the company’s new app service Around You. Users can use it to order food, book flights, book hotels and taxis or for shopping. It can be accessed by swiping right on the home screen. The company is trying to make it easier for users to complete all their tasks from just one platform instead of downloading separate apps for every task on the device.
The Yu Utopia is the most powerful handset the company has launched so far. The handset impressed us in some departments but also disappointed in some others. However, the metal unibody design, QHD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 4GB RAM can make this phone popular. In terms of specifications, it will directly compete with the OnePlus 2 and Moto X Style, while its price is less than both of these handsets. Can you buy this handset? Wait for our review for that.
