Realme XT Review
Design of Realme XT
Contents
We have the Pearl White colour variant of the Realme XT. The Realme XT is quite similar to the Realme 5 Pro, but there are some key differences. You won’t get a glimpse of the diamond pattern on the back panel, but multi-coloured lines are visible on the back of the phone when light falls from different angles.
Apart from this, the other big change is that Realme has used Gorilla Glass 5 instead of polycarbonate on the back panel. It does not get scratched easily. The white finish looks good, fingerprints are also not easily visible on it. Polycarbonate has been used to make the body but due to the silver paint, it gives it the look of aluminum.
Realme XT has a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED screen. The phone is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The phone also has an in-display fingerprint sensor for security, which unlocks the phone quickly. We did not face any problem during use. The phone has a dewdrop notch on the top of the front panel and the 16-megapixel selfie camera has been placed in the notch. It can also be used for face unlock, it works well in daylight and at night.
Realme XT has a separate slot for two nano-SIM cards and a microSD card on the left side. The USB Type-C port and headphone jack are placed at the bottom of the phone. The camera layout on the back of the phone is similar to the company’s Realme 5 Series except for the 64-megapixel primary camera sensor.
The camera module is slightly raised but you will get a case in the retail box. Apart from this, the box also contains a Type-C cable, 20 watt VOOC 3.0 fast charger, SIM eject tool and manual. Overall, Realme XT looks premium and it is not too heavy either. For your information, let us tell you that its weight is 183 grams.
Realme XT Specifications and Software
This latest handset of Realme with four rear cameras is equipped with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 processor. The price of Realme XT starts at Rs 15,999. This price is for the 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage variant. The 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage variant of the phone will be sold for Rs 16,999 and the 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage variant will be sold for Rs 18,999, we have this version available for review.
Realme XT uses UFS 2.1 flash storage. Talking about connectivity, the phone includes dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 AC, Bluetooth 5, GPS + GLONASS. The phone runs on ColorOS 6 based on Android 9 Pie along with July 2019 security patch. The new version of the skin comes with a clean look but you will still find many pre-installed apps.
Most of these are third-party apps like Facebook, UC Browser etc., let us tell you that these can be uninstalled. You will also get to see OSIE Vision Effect in the display menu. We did not receive ads or unwanted notifications on the phone. Realme App Store sends push notifications but if you want, you can also turn it off by going to the settings menu of the app.
Google’s Digital Wellbeing feature was not present in the phone, but the company told Gadgets 360 that the Realme XT will get this feature in the future via an over-the-air update. At the launch event, Realme also teased upcoming features like a system-wide dark mode and a feature to change font styles in the coming time.
Realme XT performance and battery life
The day to day experience of Realme XT was not much different from Realme 5 Pro and that is a good thing. The phone is quite long so it can be a bit difficult to use it with one hand but you can enable one-handed mode if you want. The display is bright and there was no problem in reading on the display in daylight, the colors also look good on the display.
The pre-applied screen guard on the display is useful. We have the 8GB RAM variant of the Realme XT which runs Android smoothly without any issues. Multitasking and app load times were fast on the phone. Heavy games also ran smoothly. PUBG Mobile ran on the high preset by default and the gameplay was smooth.
The back of the phone got a little warm after extended gameplay. After playing the game for 30 minutes, the battery was consumed about 5 percent which was acceptable. Dolby Atmos makes the bottom speaker of the phone loud. The Realme XT is powered by a 4,000mAh battery.
In our battery loop test, the phone lasted for 20 hours and 36 minutes. On heavy usage, the phone lasted for a day and on light media usage, it lasted for one and a half days. During testing, we noticed that the phone lasted for the whole day even after using the camera, gaming tests and running benchmarks. With the help of fast charging, the phone’s battery gets charged quickly. The phone’s battery was charged up to 46 percent in half an hour, 88 percent in one hour and the phone’s battery was fully charged after taking half an hour more.
Realme XT Camera
Both the Realme 5 Pro and Realme X (Review) come with 48-megapixel camera sensors, but this Realme phone has a 64-megapixel Samsung GW1 image sensor. The phone uses 4-in-1 pixel binning technology that saves 16-megapixel images. You can also shoot at 64-megapixel resolution if you want.
We were expecting some new additions to the Realme XT’s camera app, but there was none. You still can’t shoot videos using the wide-angle camera and there’s no way to adjust the level of background blur in portrait mode. The good news is that Realme has revealed that it will add a Nightscape mode for the selfie camera in a future update.
The 64-megapixel primary sensor captures detailed, pixel-binning shots. HDR works well, colours had good saturation, and autofocus is fast. Distant objects also looked good in landscape mode. Compared to pixel-binning images, the photos captured by the Realme XT in full-resolution had cooler colour tones and less noise in shadow areas.
Even in low light, the sensor captures colours and details well. There is some grain in the shadow areas, but you will see this only when you zoom in on the picture. Close-up shots capture good detail. Focus speed was fast and the built-in AI does object recognition well.
Focus speed was fast even in low light, colours and details were captured well. At times, the camera app boosted colours, making the scene or object look vivid and dramatic. The other cameras are the same as we have seen earlier in the Realme 5 Pro. The 8-megapixel wide-angle camera captured details well in daylight but colours were not very accurate.
The 2-megapixel macro camera helps in taking extreme close-up shots. Realme XT does a good job when using portrait mode. Edge detection was also good and details were crisp due to the 2-megapixel depth sensor. The 16-megapixel front camera on the front panel of Realme XT takes good selfies.
The beauty mode isn’t too aggressive and HDR works well. Detail is also captured well. In low light, the phone captured usable photos with good skin tones. Videos taken with the selfie camera were also stabilized, just like the Realme 5 Pro.
The phone is capable of recording videos at 4K resolution and 30 frames per second but without stabilisation. Image quality was good but colours are over-boosted. You can record videos in 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second.
Our verdict
The Realme XT is another strong option in the company’s smartphone lineup, but customers have other options in this price segment as well. Choosing between the Realme XT, Realme 5 Pro and Realme X (Review) depends on what you want from a phone. In terms of specifications, the Realme 5 Pro and Realme XT are very close to each other.
The top variant of Realme XT is priced at Rs 18,999. If you want a good camera in your phone, then the four cameras in Realme XT can prove useful for you. In this price segment, Realme XT is equipped with many features. Considering the primary camera of the phone, the camera app should have had more features and low-light video at 4K could also have been better.
