Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Review: Is it a real upgrade?

The Galaxy M53 5G occupies the top position in Samsung’s M series. A large range of prices is available in this series of the company. This latest smartphone comes with interesting features like 120Hz refresh rate, Super AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC and vapor cooling system. It has a 108-megapixel camera. My first impressions for the device were positive. Now it’s time to see how it competes with the competition in the market. Is it a good upgrade to the Galaxy M52 5G and should it be your first choice in smartphones under Rs 30,000? Let’s find out …

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G price in India

The price of Samsung Galaxy M53 5G in India starts at Rs 26,499. It comes in its 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. The next variant comes in 8GB RAM + 128GB storage, which is priced at Rs 28,499. I had its Mystic Green color unit. It also comes in Deep Ocean Blue color.

Design of Samsung Galaxy M53 5G

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is primarily made of plastic and feels quite sturdy, but not too premium. In my first impressions, I praised its Mystic Green finish. I am still sticking with it as it helps it stand out from the competition. After a week of use, I found that it gets smudges easily, although they are not glaringly visible. Being the most expensive device in the M series, the company should have also provided a rear case in the box.

The accessories missing from the box include a charger. Only a USB Type-C to Type-C cable is available in the box. If you have a USB Type-C charger, you can charge the device with it. For fast charging, you will need a 25W charger. Samsung’s official charger is available for Rs 1200.

The phone’s side-mounted fingerprint scanner is easy to reach, but the same is not the case with the volume buttons. Due to its large size, it is a bit difficult to use the device with one hand. It has a large 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, as was also given in the Galaxy M52 5G. The phone weighs 176 grams, which I think is easily manageable.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Specifications and Software

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G has MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC. It also has a vapor cooling chamber which keeps the temperature of the phone under control. Along with dual SIM support, it has 12 5G bands and also supports 4G VoLTE. The company has provided auto data switch feature in it. With this, when the data of one SIM is turned off, the phone automatically switches to the data of the other SIM so that the data connection remains in the phone all the time.

This latest phone from Samsung has a hybrid SIM tray. I think the company should have launched another variant with more storage. Through the RAM Plus feature, you can use a small part of the storage as RAM. In my 6GB variant, I had the facility to use 6GB space from the storage as RAM. This comes in handy when you do multitasking.

The Super AMOLED Plus panel of the phone comes with full-HD Plus resolution and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. Only a few smartphones such as Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G, Mi 11i and Realme GT Master Edition come with high refresh rate AMOLED display at this price. In this, the screen refresh rate was set to 120Hz by default. In the display settings, there is an option to choose between Vivid and Natural color mode. With this, the color temperature of the panel can be changed.

Talking about the software, the phone gets Android 12 out of the box with Samsung’s OneUI 4.1 skin on top. The company has promised two years of Android OS updates and four years of security updates for the Galaxy M53 5G. OneUI is easy to use but there is a lot of third-party bloatware in it. You can uninstall most of these apps. Like Apple’s Continuity feature, in this too you can copy and transfer text and images to other Samsung devices. But for that, the same Samsung account must be signed in on all devices. The phone also has some experimental features including Multi Window, with the help of which you can run multiple apps in a resizable pop-up window.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G performance and battery life

The performance of Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is quite good for a normal user. Its Super AMOLED crisp display has good viewing angles and there are many options for customization as well. The single speaker supports Dolby Atmos. If there were dual speakers, the experience would have been better.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G handles daily usage needs smoothly. Apps and games load very quickly and multitasking is great. Its side-mounted fingerprint scanner is quite accurate and there is very little chance of having to try a second time to unlock the phone. The 120Hz refresh rate also makes the UI feel super smooth.

The gaming performance of the phone is quite good. Asphalt 9: Legends ran very well at 60Hz and there was no lag. After 15 minutes of gaming, the battery went down by 3 percent which is normal. There was no heat felt in the phone.

Talking about benchmark scores, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G scored 424,426 points on AnTuTu. It scored 731 and 2,264 points respectively in the single core and multi core tests of Geekbench 5. These scores were lower than the Realme GT Master Edition and Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G, which are cheaper in starting price and come with better specifications than this.

The battery life of the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is impressive. Its 5,000mAh battery lasts more than a day. In the HD video loop test, the phone lasted 18 hours and 24 minutes. No charger was provided with the phone, so I used the USB Type-C charger of the MacBook Air (2020) in it. The phone also showed fast charging, but it was difficult to say that it was charging at the full capacity of 25W. The phone charged 31 percent in half an hour and 58 percent in an hour.

Cameras of Samsung Galaxy M53 5G

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G has a quad camera setup. The primary camera in it is 108 megapixels, along with an 8-megapixel ultrawide angle camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. In comparison, Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G also comes with the same camera setup.

The phone is quite fast in focusing and takes the right exposure. Close shots are also quite impressive. However, one has to be a little patient in portrait shots, as it takes some time. The daylight shots of the phone are quite good and the details come out well. The photos of the ultrawide camera also have the tone of the primary camera, which is a good thing. But there is a lack of details in it. Barrel distortion is very less visible in the ultrawide photo.

The macro camera captures good photos and I was able to get very close to the subject while shooting. Its low-light camera performance is quite good. However, there was a lack of details in the dark areas of landscape shots. There was some improvement in the night mode but the phone was taking 3 to 4 seconds to take a photo. Sometimes it was taking good photos and sometimes soft results. Therefore, nothing can be said about it with certainty.

The phone’s 32-megapixel selfie camera captures 8-megapixel photos by default. Selfies taken during the day look quite good. Colors are natural. Edge detection is good in portrait shots. The low-light performance of the selfie camera is average.

Talking about video recording, it can shoot 4K videos at 30fps. The phone relies on EIS for footage stabilization. Colours look very good in daylight videos but the video shakes. In low-light footage, I find a lot of disturbance. There is also a Super Steady mode in the camera app but it crops the frame too much to bring stabilization and the resolution is reduced to 1080p.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is a good upgrade over the Galaxy M52 5G. The phone looks premium and the hardware is powerful. One good thing in the phone’s favor is that it promises Android OS and security updates, so that it can compete with the rivals for a long time. In my opinion, its 6GB RAM variant proves to be more value for money. I also feel that Samsung should have also provided a 25W charger with it according to the price.

If you still don’t like the Galaxy M53 5G, you can look at the Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G which is a much better alternative. In this, you get a more powerful Dimensity 920 SoC chipset and a 120W charger is available in the box itself. Those who are looking for a good camera phone can look at the Realme 9 Pro +. If your budget does not allow, then Mi 11i and Realme GT Master Edition can also be options.
