10.or D (Tenor D) Review
The Tenor D is a new brand in the country and the Tenor E and Tenor G phones have been launched earlier as well. The new Tenor D smartphone has been launched under the ‘Crafted for Amazon’ program, which Amazon says that under this the best products are made according to the needs of the customers. The Tenor D will be available exclusively on Amazon India and its price starts at Rs 4,999. The phone will go on sale in early January. Due to the low price of the phone, the 10.or will face tough competition from the Xiaomi Redmi 5A (Review). Xiaomi has marketed the Redmi 5A as the country’s smartphone. And this smartphone launched at Rs 5,999 is being sold for Rs 4,999 to the first 5 million customers. Now if you have a limited budget and you are looking for a smartphone, is the Tenor D a capable device? We have done a detailed review of this device. Let us know in the review whether it lives up to your expectations?
Design of 10.or D
Talking about the design, the Tenor D is a simple design handset and there is nothing special about it. The company has used plastic and a metallic finish has been given on the rear panel. This smartphone is available in Beyond Black and Aim Gold color variants. We had a gold review unit which has gold on the front and you can choose the black variant for a more sober look as per your choice.
The Tenor D has a 5.2-inch screen with thick edges at the top and bottom. There is a selfie camera, earpiece grille and notification LED at the top of the screen. This phone does not have an ambient light sensor, so you will have to manually adjust the brightness all the time. There is a blank space below the screen and the phone uses on-screen navigation buttons instead of capacitive buttons.
We found the phone easy to hold with one hand due to its compact size, curved edges and rounded corners. While the buttons are on the right side, the power button on the device is placed above the volume rocker buttons. You need to put in a little effort to reach the power button. The Tenor D has a fingerprint scanner on the rear and this feature is available in very few smartphones at this price point.
The smartphone is 9.98 mm thick and weighs 150 grams, which makes it feel heavier than the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. The Tenor D has a SIM tray slot on the left side which can be used for two nano SIMs and a microSD card. The micro-USB port, primary microphone are at the bottom while the secondary microphone and 3.5mm headphone jack are at the top. The phone has a loudspeaker at the rear. A 5 watt charger is available with the Tenor D but headphones will not be available in the box.
10.or D specifications and software
Now we have to see what we get in Tenor D. The phone has a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor that runs at 1.4 GHz. The phone is available in two variants of 2 GB RAM / 16 GB storage and 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. We got the 3 GB RAM variant for review, which is priced at Rs 5,999 and the variant with less RAM is available for Rs 4,999. Storage can be expanded up to 128 GB via microSD card.
The 5.2-inch IPS display has a resolution of 720×1280 pixels but there is no protection. The panel has good contrast and great viewing angles. The Tenor D does not have an ambient light sensor which means you will have to adjust the brightness every time you go out or come in. Compared to the Redmi 5A, the phone has a bigger 3500mAh battery.
Talking about the software, the Tenor D runs on stock Android 7.1.2 Nougat and comes with a number of apps preinstalled. You get the Tenor Care app, Amazon Shopping, Amazon Kindle, Amazon Prime Video, and a sound recorder app. Apart from the option to schedule off and on in the settings, there are no changes compared to stock Android. Tenor says that the device will be upgraded to Android Oreo which is great considering the low price.
10.or D performance, cameras, and battery life
There is no doubt that the Tenor D comes with impressive hardware for its price. We found the phone to run smoothly. Our 3GB RAM unit had an average of 1.5GB of free RAM. However, it does take time to load apps and games. The smartphone supports 4G and VoLTE but only one SIM card will support 4G networks at a time. We found the fingerprint scanner on the phone to be quite accurate but it does take a while to unlock the phone.
Talking about benchmarks, we got decent figures. The battery life of the phone is also good and we were able to use the phone for a full day without needing to charge it. In our HD video loop test, the phone’s battery lasted for 12 hours and 26 minutes.
The Tenor D sports a 13-megapixel camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel camera on the front. The camera app is basic. The camera is set to auto scene detection by default while you can manually select several modes. Apart from this, you have modes like panorama and beautification. The camera has a face detection mode by default and it works well.
We found photos taken with both cameras to be usable. They look like they were taken on an affordable handset as the edges are blurry. In daylight, we found landscape shots to be lacking in detail and quite ugly in our opinion. The camera takes time to determine exposure and locks focus slowly. Macro shots have decent detail but need to be re-focused at times. The camera struggles in low light. Night shots are not very usable. The phone has low noise but in return lacks in detail. Overall, the cameras are one of the drawbacks of the phone.
Our verdict
The performance of the Tenor D is quite good for the price. The phone has powerful hardware and runs stock Android well. But the camera performance is not as good as other devices in this price range. However, the fingerprint sensor makes this phone a better option than the Redmi 5A.
